International Relations Grants Program (IRGP) – Overview

Overview

This program seeks to support the government's foreign policies and economic diplomacy interests and projects a positive contemporary image of Australia. It supports professional, community and institutional linkages between Australia and its partners on contemporary issues of shared interest including business, education, the arts, media, science, technology and sport.

The following Councils, Foundations and Institutes of the department each have specific activities they are looking for applicants to focus their attention on:
1. Australia-China Council (ACC)
- Promotes mutual understand and foster people-to-people relations between Australia and China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
- The 2018-19 round opened 5 February 2018 and closed 28 March 2018, 2pm AEST.

2. Australia-India Council (AIC)
- Focuses on projects which are likely to promote long-term contact and cooperation between Australia and India.
- The 2018-19 round opened 7 February 2018 and closed 29 March 2018 April 2017, 2pm AEST.

3. Australia-Indonesia Institute (AII)
- Focuses on projects running in areas of education, interfaith, youth, arts and culture, civil society and media and Australian studies. 
- The 2018-19 funding round opened 5 February 2018 and closed 21 March 2018, 2pm AEST.

4. Australia-Japan Foundation (AJF)
- Aims to expand and develop contact and exchange between the peoples of Australia and Japan, and to help project positive images of Australia and Japan in each other's country.
- The 2018-19 funding round opened 5 February 2018 and closed 4 April 2018, 2pm AEST.

5. Australian-Korea Foundation (AKF)
- Aims to develop long-term links between individuals and institutions in Australia and counterparts in Korea.
- The 2018-19 funding round opened 5 February 2018 and closed 4 April 2018, 2pm AEST.

6. Council of Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR)
- Supports projects that will enhance Australia's economic, cultural and social relations with countries in the Arab region (comprising the 22 members of the Arab League).
- The 2018-19 funding round opened 5 February 2018 and closed 4 April 2018, 2pm AEST.

7. Council on Australian Latin America Relations (COALAR)
- Supports innovative projects in priority areas being business, education, tourism, sustainability and cultural promotion (including sport).
- The 2018-19 funding round opened 6 February 2018 and closed 28 March 2018, 2pm AEST.

8. Australia-ASEAN Council (AAC)
- Generates opportunities for Australian business, education, science and innovation, and the arts to work with partners in South-East Asia.
- Grants between $10,000 and $50,000 are available.A total funding pool between $250,000 and $300,000 is available in 2018-19 subject to appropriation, starting in July 2018.
- The 2018-19 funding round opened 5 February 2018 and closed 4 April 2018, 2pm AEST.

9. Australian Cultural Diplomacy Grants Program (ACDGP)
- Supports the delivery of high-quality public diplomacy initiatives which promote economic, artistic, and cultural assets to an international audience, to strengthen Australia’s reputation as an innovative, creative nation and foster collaborative people-to-people links internationally.
- Applicants may apply for multi-year funding of up to three years and at a maximum of $60,000 per year.
- Funding is dependent on DFAT budgetary constraints. In previous years the total ACDGP has been capped at less than $500,000.
- The 2018-19 funding round opened 5 February 2018 and closed 9 March 2018.

Grants of up to $40,000 are generally available for each individual program (except for AAC and ACDGP).      

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants include Australian individuals and organisations, as well as joint applications involving non-Australian individuals or organisations with an Australian partner.

Applicants will need to demonstrate an established record of achievement in the development and management of projects relevant to their proposed area of endeavour and should provide evidence of experience.

Eligible activities include those that support professional, community and institutional linkages between Australia and its partners on contemporary issues of shared interest including the arts, media, education, science, technology and social development initiatives such as health and sport.

Restrictions

The following are ineligible for funding:
- Capital expenditure including items such as real property, equipment or computer software.
- Activities that are properly the responsibility of other funding bodies or other government agencies (e.g. development assistance projects, trade promotion and academic research).
- Activities that are commercially viable in their own right or which give a commercial advantage to one organisation.
- Conference travel, salaries for research assistants or administrative staff; honorariums or administrative charges levied by the applicant's organisation.
